CT81 – Religion in the North Caucasus PART 1/3 | Overview of Religion | Focus on Islam | Star Wars and KBR

While religion may be a tender subject to bring up in mixed company in some parts of the world, in the North Caucasus it’s unavoidable. Hardly a day goes by that we don’t talk religion with one friend or another. To understand the Caucasus, then, is to talk—and listen, and hear, and think—about religion. Over the next three episodes we will air an extended conversation between the two of us about the many colorful facets of religion in this region. As always, much is based on our experience with our many friends from many backgrounds. We want to acknowledge up front that even though we are not endorsing one thing or another, some listeners will likely feel misrepresented. Please know that is not our purpose at all. If you know us, you know that we are open to learning more! So let this serve as an invitation for more discovery about this rich, deep, and pervasive part of life in the North Caucasus.

Today we discuss the wide diversity of religions represented in the North Caucasus and take a dive into Islam in its many forms. Enjoy the conversation!

  1. As a Hungarian muslim, who loves Dagestan, Chechniya and the Caucasus very much, I can only say, the main principles of Islam is the same for all muslims: be dignified, honest, truthful, be just, even it is against your own self, respect every living soul, spread ‘ salam’ – ‘peace’.
Protect your honour, be humble, dont be arrogant and proud, but be confident. Forgiveness is better than retaliation; the reward is bigger from the Almighty. The Quran teaches us that Jews and Christians got the message first, they are ” People of the Book” We have to live in peace with everyone, unless they attack us.
Dagestan is so special because of its many ethnicities and diversity in religion too. I can say the same about Hungary too. ( Christians, Jews, Muslims etc..)
Hope you guys are able to enjoy muslim hospitality in Dagestani regions.

I beleive this stream is very useful for Western people esspecially. The history part for sure! / old Soviet era etc…/

    Salam and Dasvedaniya!

    1. Dear Virag,
Thank you for your insightful feedback. It’s very cool to hear about the similarities between Dagestan and Hungary. Andrew and I have both benefited incredibly from the generous hospitality of local friends and hosts. Thanks for listening!
